RESUME TIPS FOR IT PROFESSIONALS
Your Resume Is Your First Technical Assessment. Make It Count.
Lead with impact, not responsibilities.
Hiring managers skim resumes in seconds. Don't bury your best work under generic job descriptions. Lead each role with what you accomplished — not what you were "responsible for." "Migrated 40+ microservices to Kubernetes, reducing deployment time by 60%" is infinitely stronger than "Responsible for managing containerized applications."
Tailor your resume to each role.
A single generic resume sent to 50 employers will underperform a tailored resume sent to 10. Match your skills section, project highlights, and summary statement to the specific role you're applying for.
Put your tech stack front and center.
Include a dedicated "Technical Skills" section near the top of your resume. Organize by category: languages, frameworks, cloud platforms, databases, tools, and certifications. Hiring managers and recruiters scan this section first.
Quantify everything you can.
"Improved API response time by 40%," "Managed a $2M cloud infrastructure budget," "Led a team of 8 engineers" — these are concrete. "Improved system performance" and "Led engineering team" are not.
Keep it clean and scannable.
Use a simple, professional format. No graphics, no columns, no fancy templates that break ATS parsing. Black text, white background, clear section headers, and consistent formatting throughout. Save as PDF unless the application specifically requests .docx.
Length: 1–2 pages maximum.
One page for candidates with fewer than 7 years of experience. Two pages for senior professionals and executives. No one reads page three.
Proofread — then proofread again.
Typos, grammatical errors, and formatting inconsistencies signal carelessness. In a field where attention to detail matters, your resume is exhibit A. Have someone else review it before you submit.

Before Your Next Job Search, Answer These Five Questions
These are the questions our recruiters ask every candidate during intake. Thinking through them in advance will make your job search faster, more focused, and more successful.
1. What do I want my day-to-day to actually look like?
Not the title. Not the company name. The actual work. Do you want to build from scratch or optimize existing systems? Lead a team or go deep as an IC? Work on a single product or rotate across projects? Knowing what energizes you day-to-day matters more than chasing a title.
2. What's my non-negotiable?
Every candidate has one. It might be remote work, a specific salary floor, avoiding on-call rotations, or working with a particular technology. Identify yours early so you don't waste time interviewing for roles you'd never accept.
3. What gap do I need to close?
Be honest about where your skills are strong and where they're thin. If every role you're interested in requires Kubernetes and you've never touched it, that's a gap worth closing before your next search — not during it.
4. Am I running toward something or away from something?
Job searching out of excitement for what's next produces better decisions than searching out of frustration with what's now. If you're running away, take a breath and make sure your next move is strategic — not reactive.
5. What does success look like in 12 months?
Picture yourself a year into your next role. What have you built? What have you learned? What does your team look like? If you can articulate what "winning" looks like, you'll make better choices about which opportunities to pursue.

A word of caution: Certifications open doors, but they don't close deals on their own. Hiring managers in 2026 consistently tell us they value demonstrated, production-ready experience over certifications alone. The strongest candidates pair certifications with hands-on project work that proves they can apply what they've learned.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE TECH JOB MARKET RIGHT NOW
The market favors specialists.
Generalists who know a little bit about a lot of technologies are finding it harder to compete. Employers are hiring for specific, deep expertise. If you can go deep in one or two high-demand areas, you'll have more leverage than a generalist with a broader but shallower skill set.
AI is reshaping roles, not eliminating them.
The demand for human professionals who can architect, orchestrate, and oversee AI systems is growing — not shrinking. Candidates who can demonstrate how they use AI tools effectively as part of their workflow are more attractive to employers.
Cybersecurity demand continues to outpace supply.
Security professionals at every level remain in exceptionally high demand, and compensation continues to rise. If you're considering a career pivot into cybersecurity, the investment in upskilling has a strong ROI.
Soft skills are not optional.
Communication, collaboration, systems thinking, and the ability to work across teams are core requirements. Hiring managers evaluate how you explain your work and collaborate with non-technical stakeholders just as closely as technical depth.
